Timing matters for Christmas tree removal — a dried tree is a fire hazard and pickup windows fill up fast. Here is how to plan without guessing.

A real tree dries out faster than you think

Once a cut tree is out of water it begins to dry quickly, and a dried-out tree is one of the highest-fire-risk items you can keep in a living room. Within days of the holidays the needles turn brittle and drop.

That is the safety case for not letting a tree sit until February. The practical case is that pickup schedules fill up the week after New Year's Day, so booking early beats waiting until the tree is already dropping needles everywhere.

Book the week the providers are busiest

The first two weeks of January are peak demand for tree removal. Providers run tight routes and some cap daily pickups. Booking a few days ahead — ideally right after the holidays — keeps you from chasing a slot later.

If your area offers municipal drop-off or mulching days, check the dates early too. Those windows are often short and the lines long.

Have the tree ready for pickup

Most curbside pickups expect the tree by the curb, free of lights, ornaments, and the stand. Some providers will carry it out from inside; others only take it from the curb. Confirm what is included when you book.

If you booked a drop-off, check whether the site accepts flocking or tinsel — many recycling programs do not, and a flocked tree often has to go to landfill instead of mulch.
