A tree that is ready for the curb gets picked up faster. Here is the short checklist to prep before the provider arrives.

Strip it down to the tree

Remove every ornament, light string, hook, and garland before the provider arrives. Even a few forgotten hooks can jam a mulcher or contaminate a recycling load, and most providers expect a bare tree.

Take off the stand too — the metal and plastic are not recyclable with the tree and some providers will not take a tree that still has one attached.

Move it to the curb

Most curbside pickups expect the tree by the curb, not on the porch. Check whether your provider will carry it out from inside or whether the tree needs to be at the curb first. That detail changes the booking.

Stand the tree upright if you can, or lay it along the curb where a truck can reach it. A tree wedged behind parked cars or tucked into a narrow walk gets skipped.

Ask before you assume

Flocked and flocked-style trees are often refused by recycling programs because the flocking contaminates the mulch. If your tree is flocked, tell the provider when you book so they can route it to landfill instead of recycling — or tell you they can't take it.

A quick call ahead saves a missed pickup and a tree sitting by the curb for a week. The directory listing is the fastest way to ask.
