Not every boarding facility is the same. Here is what to compare before you leave your cat with one.

Start with the accommodation type

Cat boarding facilities range from private enclosures to cage-free suites. Some cats do fine in a smaller space; others get stressed without room to move. Ask what each facility offers and match it to how your cat handles confinement.

A private suite with a window, shelf, or separate sleeping and litter area is usually less stressful than a stacked cage in a busy room. If your cat is shy or older, a quieter setup matters more than playtime.

Ask about daily routine and human contact

Find out how often staff interact with each cat — feeding, litter checks, playtime, and any one-on-one attention. A facility that lists a clear daily routine is easier to compare than one that says only 'we love cats.'

Ask whether playtime is individual or in a shared space. Many cats do not enjoy group play, and mixing unfamiliar cats can spread illness. Individual attention is usually the safer option.

Check vaccinations and medical support

Reputable facilities require proof of up-to-date vaccinations, usually including rabies and an upper-respiratory combo. If a facility does not ask for records, treat that as a warning sign.

If your cat needs medication, a special diet, or has a chronic condition, ask whether staff can administer it and whether a vet is on call. Some facilities offer medical boarding; others cannot accommodate it.
