Direct Mail Fulfillment: What the Service Actually Includes

Direct mail fulfillment sounds like one job, but it covers print, kitting, storage, and shipping. Here is what the scope usually includes before you ask for a quote.
Print is often the start, not the whole job
A direct mail campaign usually needs design, printing, addressing, and postage applied before anything ships. Some providers handle all of it; others take printed pieces and only mail them.
Clarify whether the provider prints in-house or outsources the print, and whether proofing happens before the run starts. The scope drives both cost and turnaround.
Kitting and assembly
When a mailer or subscription box has multiple components, kitting is the step that assembles them. That can be folding, inserting, shrink-wrapping, or building a bundle.
Ask how the provider handles components that arrive at different times and what the storage picture looks like between the print and the send.
Storage and outbound shipping
Fulfillment often includes holding inventory in a warehouse and shipping it out as mail or orders land. That means pallet storage, pick-and-pack, and a carrier relationship.
Find out whether storage is included or billed separately, and which carriers the provider ships through. The shipping cost is usually most of the total.
